What is a Dental Crown?

Dental Crowns are a type of restoration that when placed, surround the entire tooth to give it strength.  They are designed to be used on severely broken down teeth, teeth with existing large restorations or teeth that have heavy biting forces placed on them.

Crowns can be made out of a variety of materials for strength, looks or both. The doctor in consultation with the patient decide which material best suits the situation.

Introducing CEREC Technology

Crowns can now be fabricated using CEREC technology. This gives us the ability to reduce the process from 2 appointments to a single appointment, saving the patient time and reducing anaesthesia (freezing) to one time only.

A crown is used to entirely cover or “cap” a damaged tooth. They are designed to be used on severely broken down teeth, teeth with existing large restorations, teeth that have completed root canal treatment or teeth that have heavy biting forces placed on them. Besides strengthening a damaged tooth, a crown can be used to improve its appearance, shape or alignment.

Dental Crowns with One-Appointment CEREC Technology

Dental crowns can also be placed on top of an implant to provide a tooth-like shape and structure for function and aesthetics.

Crowns can be made out of a variety of materials; porcelain, porcelain fused to metal or gold. They provide strength, aesthetics or both. The doctor, in consultation with the patient, decide which material best suits the situation.

With a few exceptions, porcelain crowns can now be fabricated in-office using CEREC technology. This gives us the ability to reduce the process from 2 appointments to a single appointment, saving the patient time and reducing anaesthesia (freezing) to one appointment only.
